To implement a correct, motivated and efficacious treatment of aphasia clinicians should have an exhaustive knowledge of the nature of the impairment, of the impaired subject, of the treatment and its efficacy. I shall briefly consider these topics. THE IMPAIRMENT A widely accepted definition of aphasia is that it is a disorder of verbal communication due to an acquired lesion of the central nervous system involving several aspects of the processes of comprehending and producing verbal messages. Because of the complexity of language this definition allows one to identify people with aphasia but it does not permit to clearly define the impairment.
