Immigrant workers deserve equal workplace health and safety

May 12 was a dramatic day in the government’s crackdown on undocumented immigrant workers as 389 employees, most from Guatemala, were detained by federal agents at a kosher meat processing plant in Postville, Iowa. One might hope that the day also signals a tipping point in the way we enforce laws designed to protect immigrant workers, many of whom are employed in the nation’s most dangerous jobs. Following the raid, the Iowa plant was cited for federal and state labor violations, and the debate over immigrant workers in this country intensified. But there was little public debate over the health and safety conditions in the meat processing plant, which houses some of the most hazardous jobs in the country.
